"3D letters" and "backlit signage" both illuminate a storefront, but they're built differently, cost differently, and suit different retail situations. Here's how to tell which one your storefront actually needs.
Channel letters
Individual, dimensional letters — each one fabricated, wired, and mounted separately — either face-lit (the letter face glows), halo-lit (light spills around the edges onto the wall behind), or a combination. This is what gives brands like Puma or Adidas that crisp, dimensional, unmistakably premium look above a storefront.

Best for: standalone storefronts, mall frontages, brand flagships where the logo itself needs to read as premium signage — day and night.
Trade-off: higher fabrication cost per letter and longer lead time, but unmatched dimensional presence.
Backlit / lightbox signage
A flat panel — typically acrylic-faced — lit evenly from behind or within, showing a full graphic, not just letters. Think an arrow-shaped illuminated panel carrying a lifestyle image and product shots, or a directory-style illuminated board.

Best for: storefronts that need to communicate more than a logo — promotions, product imagery, directional information — or where budget and timeline favour a single fabricated unit.
Trade-off: less dimensional, but faster to produce and easier to update creative on.
Side by side
| Channel Letters | Backlit Signage | |
|---|---|---|
| Visual impact | Dimensional, premium | Flat, graphic-rich |
| Best for | Brand / logo identity | Promotions, product imagery |
| Night appearance | Halo / face-lit glow | Even panel glow |
| Lead time | Longer — multiple fabricated pieces | Shorter — single panel |
| Creative updates | Rebuild letters | Replace graphic face |
Many storefronts use both — channel letters for the brand name up top, a backlit panel below for rotating promotions.
We fabricate both in our own workshop, which means finish and mounting stay consistent whichever route you choose — or both.
Frequently asked
Which lasts longer?
Both are built for years of continuous outdoor use when properly fabricated and sealed — the deciding factor is usually visual goal, not durability.
Can backlit panels be updated later?
Yes — the graphic face can often be replaced without rebuilding the unit, which is useful for seasonal promotions.
